Giancarlo DiMassa, MD
Emergency medicine physician
Dr. DiMassa is chairman of the emergency department at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, where he has also led the department’s patient experience work for a decade. That second job is unusual for an emergency physician and it tells you something about how he practises. He has spent years on the question of what it actually feels like to be the person waiting, and on programs for patients who end up in an emergency room over and over because nothing in between was available to them.
He is also a teacher. He has taught medical students at UCLA and residents at UC Irvine, and has been named faculty of the year and given a teaching award by the family medicine residency at Long Beach Memorial. During his own residency at Harbor-UCLA he served as a Spanish translator for the department.
